Mary Virginia Roop, 88, of Westminster, died Sunday, December 8, 2013, at Lorien Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Taneytown, of natural causes.
Born November 18, 1925, in Sycamore, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Oma B. Seitz Huffman and the Rev. J. Wade Huffman. She was the wife of Charles David Roop, her husband of 63 years.
A graduate of Clear Spring High School in 1944, she then attended Shenandoah Junior College and graduated from Frostburg State College in 1948. She taught at Liberty, New Windsor and Uniontown elementary schools for several years. During her teaching career, she also worked as a private tutor and worked in special education for Lincoln Intermediate unit as a teacher's aide.
She was a longtime volunteer for Homewood Retirement Centers in Frederick, and Hanover, Pa. She was a long-term member of Emmanuel Baust United Church of Christ.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are son Philip B. Roop and wife Kelli, of New Windsor; daughter Jan B. Corbin and husband Ron, of Taneytown; a grandson, Nathan Roop, of Richmond Va; a granddaughter, Adeline Roop, of New Windsor; six nephews; and two nieces.
She was predeceased by a son, Charles Wade Roop; a sister, Betty Jo Bossart; and a brother, Robert B. Huffman.
Per her request, her body was donated to the State Anatomy Board for medical education and research.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at Emmanuel Baust United Church of Christ, 2950 Old Taneytown Road, Westminster.
