Trying to figure out a way to jump-start that New Year's fitness resolution you made? You can find some ideas at Saturday's Freedom Fitness open house.

Freedom Fitness, part of the Freedom Area Recreation Council, invites the community to visit the open house any time between 7:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the new location at 1950 Dickenson Road, Suite B, Eldersburg.

You can see the new facility, try out a sample class, and, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. at the open house, get a 20 percent discount on unlimited memberships with Freedom Fitness.

This Saturday, the classes will be free, but you're asked to preregister online to reserve space at http://www.freedomfitness.info/events. Tracy Cox, Freedom Fitness coordinator, said, "It's great: Paperless, online registration. Save a tree."

The classes offered are: Zumba with instructor Morgan Little at 7:30 a.m., Step Blast with instructor Breanna Shumpert at 8:30 a.m., Muscle Pump Group Strength with Breanna Shumpert at 9:30 a.m., Taste of Zumba with instructor Tracy Cox at 10:30 a.m., and Taste of Freedom Barre None with instructor Heather Snyder at 11:30 a.m.

If you're coming to try a class, wear comfortable clothing and appropriate shoes and bring along your water bottle.

All of the Freedom Fitness instructors are nationally certified and licensed group fitness professionals.

"Certification is really important," Cox said. "We feel that you should be able to trust your instructor."

Zumbathon planned

Now that you're thinking about getting on the move for 2014, you might want to commit further and sign up for the second annual Carroll County Zumbathon, scheduled for 9 to 11 a.m. Jan. 26 at the South Carroll Senior and Community Center.

The Sunday morning Zumba party will feature Zumba Fitness professionals from all over Carroll County, including Tracy Cox, Breanna Shumpert, Tracy Baskerville, Homero Bayaera, Laura "Lulu" Sines, Tony Edghill, Tiara Ball and Jan Smith.

The music will be handled by deejay "Detour Dave" Sandler.

Sponsored by Freedom Fitness, the Zumbathon is open to all fitness levels. If you're not quite ready to do two hours of Zumba straight through, there will be room to rest on the bleachers in the gymnasium, if you need it.

Registration is available for $15 if you do advance, online registration at http://www.freedomfitness.info/events. Admission at the door will be $20.

Proceeds from the Zumbathon will benefit Freedom Area Recreation Council programs. Freedom Fitness will use its share for the fitness instructor fund, which helps local instructors get their certifications for the programs they teach.

Health expo

Whether you're just looking to get out for a Sunday afternoon or you've just finished the two-hour Zumbathon, stop by the 11th annual Freedom Fitness and Health Expo from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 26 at the South Carroll Senior and Community Center.

Admission to the Fitness and Health Expo is free and open to all ages. You'll find entertainment, fitness demonstrations, and free health screenings and information, along with vendors selling food.

You can find out everything you need to know about Freedom Area Recreation Council programs, including children's dance, Tae Kwon Do, adult fitness, senior fitness, baton, soccer, baseball, softball, arts programs and more.

The Stepping Stars Children's Dance will perform in the gym - with ages 3 to first grade from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and second to 12th grade from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. From 1:30 to 2 p.m. in the gym, the Freedom Fire Stars Baton group will perform.

The demonstration schedule in the cafeteria is: noon, Zumba Sentao with Jan Smith; 12:30 p.m., Zumba Toning with Breanna Shumpert; 1 p.m., Zumba Gold with Katie Bernstein; 1:30 p.m., Kids Zumba with Katie Bernstein and Heather Snyder; 2 p.m., Freedom Barre None with Heather Snyder; and 2:30 p.m., Tae Kwon Do with Allen Evans.

From 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., the South Carroll High School RoboCavs will be demonstrating their robotics projects in the cafeteria.

If you want to try a mini fitness class, head to the center's craft room, where you can try Vinyasa Yoga Class with Tracy Baskerville at 1:30 p.m. or Mat Pilates Class with Kim Crum-Derr at 2:30 p.m. Preregistration is recommended for the free classes at http://www.freedomfitness.info/events.
