Crop report for week ending Sept. 16

For the week ending Sept. 16, the days suitable for fieldwork were 6.8 days in Maryland. The topsoil and subsoil moister ratings were adequate. No rain was recorded in the 13 of the 14 weather stations for Sept. 9 through Sept. 16.

Average temperatures were cooler than normail with average temperatures ranging from two to seven degrees below normal. Soybeans in good condition, corn was in fair to good condition, and hay supplies were adequate. Pasture conditions were good and apples were also in good condition.

In Maryland, soybeans were 100 percent setting pods, 35 percent turning color, 11 percent dropping leaves, and harvest has not started. Corn progress in Mayrland was 95 percent dent, 83 percent mature, and 23 percent harvested for grain.

Corn silage harvest was 91 percent complete in Maryland, winter wheat plant was four percent complete, and barley planting was 16 percent complete. The fourth cutting of alfalfa hay was 86 percnet complete and the fifth cutting was 18 percent complete in Maryland.

The third cutting of other hay in Maryland was 69 percent complete and the fourth cutting was three percent complete. The apple harvest was 65 percent complete in Maryland.
