Letter: Marriage bill deserves passage

Recently I was shocked to see that our commissioners posted on the Carroll County Government website a link to "One Man + One Woman = Marriage." This page is an inflammatory page which is created and endorsed by the Catholic Church.

In the United States we have a separation of church and state, which means that our elected officials cannot push an agenda of a religious organization. Please join me in demanding that our commissioners remove this link from our webpage.

The gay marriage bill that is currently in the state Senate should passed. Not passing the bill is akin to segregating people due to the color of their skin. It is not erasing a community, nor is it sweeping them under the rug, it is simply making loving, productive people feel like they are less than citizens.

You would think that in the year 2012 we would be progressed enough in our thinking to realize that love is not perverse. Gay, lesbian, transexual and transgender individuals are not trying to convert our children, nor are they trying to give devious ideas to our communities. They want to be able to express their love for their families, just as those of us who are "straight."

It is time that we release the fear. We all deserve the right to keep our families together, and to care for them without having to go through massive legal battles. Marriage is the right to care for our loved ones.
