Students compete in Test of Automotive Skill and Ingenuity

A team of two students, Jacob Hollingshead and Kyle Hicks, from Carroll County Career & Technology Center in Westminster, placed third among 10 teams in the state finals of the Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills competition held April 26 the Community College of Baltimore County - Catonsville Campus. The team was coached by their instructor, Tim Haines.

A second team from the school, under the direction of instructor Jeff Leister, also participated in the state finals. The team of Lucas Warfield and Josh Dolt placed sixth in the timed, hands-on competition in which they had to diagnose and repair a deliberately "bugged" vehicle. However, the team had the fifth highest score on the online exam portion of the competition taken earlier this year to qualify for the state finals. Instructor Tim Haines' team garnered an eighth place position on the online exam.

The 10 two-person teams in Maryland with the highest combined exam score are selected to advance to the state finals. Only one team per instructor is eligible.

Both Carroll County Career and Technology Center teams represented their school in a race to correctly diagnose and repair intentionally installed "bugs" on vehicles. Each pair was judged on their speed, accuracy and workmanship.

"The competition rewards aspiring automotive technicians and, we hope, inspires them to get the best training possible so they can embark on promising careers within the automotive repair industry," said Ben Perricone, AAA Mid-Atlantic's Approved Auto Repair Territory Manager, who directed Maryland's finals competition. "With the industry constantly changing, and as vehicular technology becomes increasingly complex, we need bright young minds to take on the challenge of helping to keep drivers safe and our vehicles efficient."

As part of their placement, each student received scholarships to automotive technology schools, as well as tools and equipment.
