Ethel Houck Anders Stambaugh, 79, of Union Bridge, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013, at home.
Born April 14, 1934, in Union Bridge, she was the daughter of the late Walter Randolph and Goldie Virginia Houck. She was the wife of John Roger Stambaugh, her husband of 28 years.
She attended schools in Johnsville and Union Bridge and graduated from Elmer Wolfe High School in 1952. She received her bachelor's degree from Frostburg State Teachers College in 1956. She also received her master's equivalency. Over 35 years, she taught at Liberty Elementary School, Clarksburg Elementary School and Elmer Wolfe Elementary School, where she taught third and fourth grade from 1967 to 1992. She was a well-known area teacher, first as Mrs. Anders and then as Mrs. Stambaugh. She retired in 1992 and later worked part-time for the city of Westminster. She was also a judge for the Johnsville Election District.
She served on the Elmer Wolfe Alumni Reunion Committee for many years. She was a member of Beaver Dam Church of the Brethren and St. James Lutheran Church in Union Bridge.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are children Donald Anders and wife Pamela, of Lakeland, Fla., Douglas Anders and wife Christine, of Redondo Beach, Calif., and Marcia Metzgar and husband Karl, her caregivers, of Union Bridge; grandchildren Jason Anders, and Nicole Wallace and husband Greg, of Lakeland, Jennifer Anders-Gable and husband Shawn, of Citrus Heights, Calif., Julie Anders, of Winters, Calif., Daniel Anders, of Oceanside, Calif., Neil Metzgar, of Brunswick, and Andrew Metzgar, of New York, N.Y.; a great-grandson, Nathan Wallace, of Lakeland; sister Mary Virginia Rhoderick and husband Paul, of Middletown; brothers Raymond Randolph Houck and wife Joann, of Union Bridge, and David Thomas Houck and wife Janet, of Frederick; numerous nieces and nephews; stepchildren Stacey Shriver and husband John, of Keymar, John Stambaugh and wife Elizabeth, of Oro Valley, Ariz., Michael Stambaugh and wife Bridget, James Stambaugh and wife Susan, Jeff Stambaugh and wife Terry, and Cindy Myers and husband Doug, all of New Windsor; and numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a sister, Nona Elizabeth Houck; a brother, Gerald Lee Houck; and first husband Donald Anders.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Union Bridge Church of the Brethren, 124 S. Main St., Union Bridge, with the Rev. James Benedict, church pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Beaver Dam Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 11802 Liberty Road, Libertytown.
