James Edward Mitchell, 84 of Hanover, Pa., died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, in Hanover.
Born Oct. 29, 1929, in Hanover, he was the son of the late Mary Delphine Mitchell. He was the husband of Doris A. Burget Mitchell, his wife of 43 years.
He served in the Army as a staff sergeant, during the Korean Conflict, with the 571st Engineer Aviation. In addition, he served in the Navy Reserves. He was employed with the Baltimore City Police Department for 30 years. He was a member of the American Legion.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a son, James Martin Mitchell; a daughter, Mary Mitchell Harrell; eight stepchildren; a half-brother, Harry Mumma; 21 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Eckhardt Funeral Chapel, 3296 Charmil Drive, Manchester.
A funeral liturgy will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 5055 Grandview Ave., Hanover, with the Rev. Monsignor James M. Lyons officiating. Interment, with military honors, will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Hanover.
