Letter: Choose now for freedom

In his State of the Union Address, President Barack Obama outlined how he's replacing America's free market economy with his new top-down, centrally-planned version, "An Economy Built to Last."

Now, he's ordered the American Catholic Church to bow down to him and his will, and exposed both the depth of his contempt for the Constitution and his intent to junk it.

By proclamation, he and his policies trump First Amendment religious rights, and he has targeted all faiths, and all people of faith. His "fundamentally transforming America" continues apace -- completely consistent with Socialist doctrine.

He claims it's about women's health. I believe it is really about his power-lust and his ongoing assault on the Constitution. The First Amendment is crystal clear: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." To which part of that does this media-acclaimed constitutional law expert's oath of office not apply?

Joseph Stalin, the truly brutal Soviet dictator who murdered more than 30 million of his own citizens, said, "America is like a healthy body, and its resistance is threefold: its patriotism, its morality and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within."

Today, we are seeing Obama fulfill Stalin's dream.

Just as there are millions of self-proclaimed Catholics and others who rarely if ever set foot inside a church, even know their faith much less live it, or care about the difference, there are also many millions of self-proclaimed Americans who rarely if ever get involved, know what's at stake or care.

About, and for, both groups, Ben Franklin's words ring true: "A nation of well-informed men who have been taught to know and prize the rights which God has given them cannot be enslaved. It is in the religion of ignorance that tyranny begins."

The colonists of 1776 knew what was at stake, valued their freedoms, prepared themselves and took up the torch of liberty. Now it's time for us -- we, the people -- to follow their lead; to recognize what's at stake and care enough to prepare and act before Stalin's prediction becomes America's reality.

Free people challenge tyrants; slaves yield. Choose now: Franklin, and free -- or Stalin, and slave?
