Pet lovers welcome at Expo

On Saturday, June 15, the second Carroll County Pet Expo will take place at the Shipley Arena in Westminster from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This family-friendly event offers opportunities for visitors to interact with pet professionals such as veterinarians, animal behaviorists, groomers, trainers and businesses that provide products and services to pets and their owners. In addition, representatives from animal-related organizations such as rescue groups and shelters, dog and cat clubs, along with therapy and service dog groups who will share educational information.

A very full schedule of demonstrations, educational seminars and events will take place throughout the day. Some of the demonstrations will include the dog sports of agility, rally obedience, disc dog, carting, and K-9 nose work. The seminars will cover such topics as Pet CPR, natural diets and nutrition, dealing with dog to dog aggression problems, adding a second dog to your home, preparing dogs for vet appointments, working with herding dogs, and providing enriching activities for dogs. For something unique, miniature horses will be on display

The American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizenship Test will be offered at 3 p.m. This 10-part test assesses how dogs react to everyday real-life situations and is open to all dogs (purebreds and mixed breeds) who exhibit good manners. The dogs must not show signs of aggression or extreme shyness and demonstrate basic obedience skills Owners must provide a brush or comb for the "appearance and grooming" part of the CGC test. Pet contests will also be offered for best costume, look-alike (pet and owner), and fluffiest cat, and the winner of the Carroll County Times Pet Photo Contest will be announced.

The Pet Expo welcomes well-behaved leashed dogs, however there are rules and regulations that owners must review and sign when they arrive at the entrance. These include:

No retractable leashes will be allowed. Leashes must be 6 feet or shorter.

Dogs must be more than 6 months old, healthy, free of parasites, and have all necessary shots including rabies and distemper (FVRCP for cats).

Owners must bring water from home to prevent gastro-intestinal upsets.

Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their dogs

Dogs should be under the control of an adult, 18 years or older.

Owners will be solely liable and held responsible for any injury or property damage that results from their pet's behavior.

Owners must report any and all injuries immediately to the Carroll County Pet Expo, the Carroll County Times, all sponsors and the Carroll County Agriculture Center.

Admission for this event is $5.00 for adults and is free for children under 17. The Carroll County Times and The Advocate newspapers have been advertising $2.00 off admission coupons.
