My name is Michael Hough and I am a proven conservative leader running for State Senate in Frederick & Carroll Counties. Since 2010, I have served in the Maryland House of Delegates where I voted against every O'Malley budget and against every tax increase.
In fact, I am the only Republican candidate for this State Senate seat who has never voted to raise your taxes and I am the only candidate to sign the Americans for Tax Reform "No New Tax" pledge. Congressman Roscoe Bartlett has also endorsed my candidacy.
In addition, I have introduced legislation to stop the implementation of Obamacare and I am strongly pro-life and pro-Second Amendment. During the recent debate on Martin O'Malley's anti-gun legislation, I was one of the leaders working to defeat this bad legislation.
Frederick and Carroll Counties deserve a true conservative Republican, not 'O'Malley-lite.' To quote one of my heroes, President Ronald Reagan, we need to be a party of "bold colors, not pale pastels."
I thank the Carroll County Times for this opportunity to compare my conservative voting record against 20-year incumbent David Brinkley's liberal tax-and-spend record.
During David Brinkley's time in office, he has:
Voted for 6 of Martin O'Malley's budgets, which increased state spending by more than $10 billon
(O'Malley Budgets 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2013 and 2014)
Voted to implement, fund and bailout Obamacare in Maryland
(HB 170, 2011, HB 100, 2013, SB 134, 2014)
Co-Sponsored legislation that would have raised gas taxes in Frederick County
(SB 652, 2013).
Liberal Democrats in Annapolis are destroying our state. Their high taxes and out-of-control spending are harming families and sending jobs out of our state. When it comes to taxes and spending Martin O'Malley and David Brinkley are simply wrong. In Annapolis, David Brinkley has been a go-along to get-along Republican while I have been a true conservative.
However, being a conservative leader isn't all about opposing bad legislation, you also have to enact reforms. I have passed several criminal justice reform bills that will save taxpayers money, while making our streets safer. This legislation will hold offenders accountable when they violate the conditions of their parole and refocus our officer's attention towards dangerous criminals and away from compliant low-risk offenders. These legislative initiatives will save taxpayers more than $15 million and have already proven to prevent new criminal offenses.
Additionally, in the wake of the Penn State scandal I passed legislation to ensure if there is a similar incident in Maryland that school officials will be held criminally responsible for covering up for sex offenders.
This year I also introduced a Terms Limits bill, which would have set a twelve year limit on staying in office. I believe when politicians stay in office too long they lose touch with the people. For example, Senator Brinkley is a career politician who has been in office for 20 years. The founding fathers envisioned individuals would serve a term or two and then return home - we should go back to that system.
I currently reside in Brunswick with my wife Jo and three children Katelynn (6 years old), Grant (5 years old) and Abby (1 year old). I am a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, where I served as a Minuteman III technician. Prior to serving in the Maryland House, I was an elected member of the Frederick County Republican Central Committee, where I served as chairman.
Senator David Brinkley's record shows that he is a rubber stamp for O'Malley's and the Democrats' liberal agenda. Frederick & Carroll counties deserve a state senator who will fight out-of-control taxes and stand firm for our conservative values. If you believe, like I do, that we need to have a strong conservative voice in Annapolis, I am asking for your vote in the upcoming Republican Primary Election on June 24th.
