Helen H. Vaughn, 85, of Mount Airy

Helen Harrison Vaughn, 85, of Lorien Assisted Living in Mount Airy, formerly of Bel Air, died Tuesday, May 15, 2012, at Lorien Assisted Living.

Born May 21, 1926, in Mount Airy, she was the daughter of the late Fred E. and Catherine M. Broderick Harrison.

She was a 1943 graduate of Mount Airy High School. She was a registered nurse, having graduated from Maryland General Hospital School of Nursing in 1954. She retired from the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Perry Point. During her career she also worked at Maryland General Hospital, Springfield State Hospital in Sykesville, and Mercy Hospital in San Diego, Calif. She lived in California where she worked on the surgical team that performed some of the first open heart surgeries by physicians trained by Dr. Michael Debakey of Houston, Texas, a pioneer in open heart surgeries.

After her retirement from the VAMC she worked as a phlebotomist for the American Red Cross.

During her years as a Navy wife she lived in San Diego, Calif., Honolulu, Hawaii, Orlando, Fla., Northwest Cape, Australia, and Aberdeen.

She was an avid golfer, belonging to golf clubs in Harford County and Fort Myers, Fla., where she wintered for 10 years beginning in the mid 1990s. She enjoyed member/guest golf tournaments as well as playing golf with friends and family. She was a card and game player. She enjoyed entertaining in both her Florida residence and her condo in Bel Air.

Surviving are brother and sister-in-law Francis E. "Johnnie" and Edwina L. "Dwinnie" Harrison, of Union Bridge; sister and caregiver Loretta M. Widerman, of Sykesville; a sister-in-law, Shirley E. Harrison, of Woodbine; nieces and nephews Michael Harrison, Patsy Koontz, Sherry Harrison, Holly Frey, F. Edward Harrison, Christie Harrison, Gregory Harrison, James Harrison, Joseph Harrison, William Widerman, and Kalene Widerman; and many great nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by brothers Robert E. and Fred E. "Gene" Harrison; a sister-in-law, Mary Sue Harrison; a brother-in-law, Paul R. Widerman; and a nephew, John Franklin "Frankie" Harrison.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Poplar Springs. Interment will follow in St. Michael's Cemetery in Poplar Springs.
