Norman L. Wetzel, 82, of Union Bridge

Norman Leroy Wetzel, 82, of Union Bridge, died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014, at Carroll Hospital Center, after a lingering illness.

Born Dec. 16, 1931, in Legore, he was the son of the late Norman Argene and Virgie Grimes Wetzel. He was the husband of Patricia Frock Wetzel, his wife of 50 years.

He served in the Army in the 3rd Armored Division, 813th Engineer Corps and in the 29th Division. He worked as a farmer, and was then employed by Mitchell Transport as a driver for 27 years, retiring in 1986.

He was a life member of VFW Post 8806 in Union Bridge and the Sportsmen's Club of Waynesboro, Pa. He also held membership in the AMVETS - Shangra La Post 7 in Thurmont; Glen W. Eyler Post 282 American Legion in Woodsboro; and Fraternal Order of Eagles in Littlestown, Pa. He enjoyed traveling and socializing with friends, fishing, crabbing, golfing and collecting memorabilia.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a son, Mark Allen Wetzel, of Hanover, Pa.; grandchildren Dustin, Derek and Dylan Wetzel, and Stacy Schubert; great-granddaughters Lillie, Brittney, Madyson and Jayden Geppi; a sister, Wanda Grimes, of New Windsor; and brothers Sam and Wilbur Wetzel, both of Union Bridge, and Stephen Wetzel, of Hanover, Pa.

He was predeceased by brothers Lorn, Marshall and Jerry Wetzel.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 6 E. Broadway, Union Bridge.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Richard L. Michael, pastor of St. James Lutheran Church in Union Bridge, officiating. Military interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery in Union Bridge.
