Letter: Support offered in BOE race

I am writing in support of Jennifer Seidel's re-election to the Carroll County Board of Education on Nov. 6.

Seidel is an experienced board member, an educator and a mother of two Carroll County Public School students with an impressive list of credentials.

Recently endorsed by the Carroll County Education Association, Seidel's recommendation was based on "knowledge and position relating to issues ranging from Race to the Top and No Child Left Behind to school budget concerns and the facilities utilization study", stated Tim Payne, President of the Carroll County Education Association.

Since elected to the Board of Education in 2008, Seidel has served on the board as vice president for two years and as president for two years. During her term Seidel served on the new Mount Airy Middle School's planning committee and is an ex-officio member of the Carroll County Public Schools Education Foundation Board. She is a member of the Resolutions' committee of the Maryland Association of Boards of Education and the Federal Relations Network of the National School Boards Association. Seidel has experience working with the county commissioners and the Carroll County delegation.

Seidel's community involvement has included serving on the Mount Airy Schools Task Force, Parr's Ridge/Mount Airy Elementary PTA, for which she co-chaired Teacher Appreciation Week, the Carroll County Public Schools Curriculum Council, Parents at Home, and the Suburban Maryland Alumni Chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi. She is also a member of the Mount Airy Middle School PTSO.

Seidel has been an educator for almost 20 years; serving as a current Carroll County Public School board member, as a parent, as a classroom teacher and as a school system central office staffer. She is a Reading Initiative & ESOL Teacher for Montgomery County Public Schools and writes educational materials for Discovery Communications, LLC. She is a member of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.

Seidel's pledge: "If re-elected, I pledge to always put the children of Carroll County first; support our teachers; maintain open communication; be honest, fair, and open minded; use common sense spending taxpayer dollars; and use common sense solutions. Above all, I am committed to providing the best school system possible."

Please join me in supporting Seidel for Board of Education on Tuesday, Nov. 6.
