North Carroll High School has been named a 2014 Green Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. North Carroll was one of two Maryland schools to be nominated for the award by the Maryland State Department of Education.
The Green Ribbon School award honors schools and districts that are exemplary in reducing environmental impact and costs; improving the health and wellness of students and staff; and providing effective environmental and sustainability education, which incorporates STEM, civic skills and green career pathways.
North Carroll High School has been working hard over the past three years to go green. The NCHS Green Team, a student led group, has increased recycling, begun composting and improved environmental awareness throughout the school. Professional development for staff members has been focused on using the environment as an integrating context for learning in all curricular areas and reducing the environmental impact as a school community.
As North Carroll has participated in its many Green School activities, the attitudes of students, teachers, and other community members have changed to those of positive environmental stewards. According to assistant principal Gina Felter, "This change in school culture has benefits that are seen in the hallways, cafeteria, and classrooms of our school building and will ultimately result in a community of caring, responsible environmental citizens."
