Westminster library branch

Wednesday

Westminster Book Discussion Group - "Birds of Paradise" by Diana Abu-Jaber: 6:30 p.m. For adults. Join in a lively discussion of each month's title.

Thursday

Getting Graphic - Drawing Comics and Manga: 2 p.m. For ages 11-17. A beginner's course in drawing for comic books, graphic novels and manga. Learn and practice some basic tips and techniques that will get you started drawing your own stories. Supplies will be provided, so come prepared to draw.

Showtime at Your Library - Movie Discussion Group: 7 p.m. For adults. Join in a discussion of each month's movie selection. Please view the movie prior to the meeting. Clips from each movie will be shown during the discussion. Call 410-386-4488 or visit library.carr.org for the movie title.

Songs at 6:30 Concert Series - No Saints: 6:30 p.m. For all ages. Join in a free evening concert series featuring local and regional musicians. Bring a blanket or chair and enjoy the music. Sponsored by the City of Westminster, Downtown Westminster Main Street Program and Coffey Music. Rain location: lower level of Longwell Parking Garage. Children 3 and younger must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.

Catriona's Castle Presents Peter Pan - An Interactive Children's Theater Event: 1 p.m. For ages 2-12. Fairy Godmother will present a 45-minute program where your child can be a star. Everyone gets to participate in re-enacting "Peter Pan." Children 3 and younger must be accompanied by an adult caregiver. This program is sponsored in part by a Community Arts Development Grant from the Carroll County Arts Council and the Maryland State Arts Council. Registration began June 29.

Saturday

Crafts with Craig: 11 a.m. For ages birth-10. Join the library for some fun summertime crafts. Children 3 and younger must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.

Foggy May Concert at the Library: 1-3 p.m. For all ages. Join the library for an outdoor concert with the group Foggy May, which blends the sounds of contemporary musicians like the Foo Fighters with the older styles of artists such as the Beatles and Nirvana. They were this year's Liberty High School Battle of the Bands winner and are two-time first-place winners of the Manchester Valley Talent Show. Children 3 and younger must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.

Water Balloon Wednesdays - Balance: 3 p.m. For ages 7-17. Is summer vacation too hot to handle? Cool off with Water Balloon Wednesdays at Finksburg. Each week will feature a different challenge. Program is weather permitting. Come prepared for a splash.

Thursday

Genre-flecting Book Club -"Riders of the Purple Sage" by Zane Grey: 7 p.m. For adults. Do you like reading classics, but also like a little variety? Then join the library for this unique book discussion group. Each quarter a topic will be selected - mystery, sci-fi, fantasy, etc. - and classic books from these unique genres will be discussed. For the summer quarter, westerns will be read.

Friday

Cupcakes and Capes: 1:30 p.m. For ages 5-10. Celebrate some sensational superheroes at the library. There will be stories, games and snacks for the hero in everyone. Feel free to come in costume. Refreshments will be served.

Saturday

PAWS to Read: 2 p.m. For ages 6-17. Come to the library and read a story to a book-loving dog. Research shows that children enjoy improving their reading skills by practice reading to animals. Registration began June 30.

Monday

Digital Photo Books: 7 p.m. For ages 13-adults. Learn to create your own digital books, from selecting your theme to adding your photos and telling your story. You can create a book of your vacation memories, sports endeavors, a gift for that special someone or whatever you choose. Bring a laptop to learn on the spot or take your new scrapbooking skills home with you. Registration began July 2.

LEGO Creations: 2 p.m. For ages 5-adults. Want to build a castle? Or a spaceship? Or something totally new and different? Join the library for a LEGO program where you can build whatever you would like. The library will supply the blocks and you supply the creativity. Bring your dad or your mom and build together.

Milkshake in Concert: 10:30 a.m. For all ages. Performing live at the library will be a duo from the Grammy-nominated, Baltimore-based children's rock band Milkshake. Come join in a rocking good time. Children 3 and younger must be accompanied by an adult caregiver. Refreshments provided by J&P Pizza. Registration began July 2.

Sidewalk Chalk Spectacular: 10 a.m. For all ages. Add your own creative touch to the Finksburg branch. Join the library on Mondays this summer to give its walkways some flair and fun. Program is weather permitting. Guidelines and chalk available at the Information Desk. Children 3 and younger must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.
