Recycling, aquarium programs offered at St. James

The St. James Episcopal Church in Mount Airy is continuing a series of presentations focusing on environmental issues and awareness.

The church hopes to increase people's awareness of environmental concerns in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. The first two presentations were in September and the next two are in October.

"The first two programs went very well and were well-received. Everyone that was there enjoyed the program," said church member Liz Peterson, who heads the Environmental Stewardship Committee.

The third program in the series will be on Monday, and will feature Annmarie Creamer, who is the Recycling Outreach Program coordinator for the Frederick County Department of Solid Waste Management. Creamer will be discussing the importance of recycling and what happens to recycled material. She will be available to answer any questions you may have about waste management.

On Oct. 8, the series will culminate with special guest, John Rancanelli, Chief Executive Officer of the National Aquarium in Baltimore. Topics for discussion will include conservation, ocean research and the National Aquarium. Rancanelli has dedicated his career to ocean conservation while his outside interests include ocean sailing, SCUBA diving, surfing and open water swimming.

The programs begin at 6:30 p.m. and should run about an hour. All programs are free and students are encouraged to come to the presentations. Light refreshments will be offered. The church is located at 1307 N. Main St. For more information, call 301-829-0325.
