Library Schedules (April 8-14)

Westminster library branch

The Westminster branch of the Carroll County Public Library, 50 E. Main St., Westminster, will offer the following programs this week. Registration is required only where noted. For more information, call 410-386-4488.

Tuesday

Story Pals-Elephants: 10 a.m. For ages 2-3. A theme-based story time featuring interactive and age-appropriate stories, songs, fingerplays and activities. With an accompanying adult caregiver.

Read and Play: 11 a.m. For ages birth-24 months. A story time featuring lap games, tickles, bounces, and rhymes followed by a playgroup for meeting and mingling. With an accompanying adult caregiver.

Evening Story Time-Elephants: 7 p.m. For all ages. End your day in a special way. This story time, open to all ages, introduces stories through books, songs and activities. Children 3 and younger must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.

Parents' Make & Take-Flannel Board Folders: 6:30 p.m. For all ages. Register for this event today. Spring break is just around the corner. Let us show you how you can create a portable flannel board to help pass the free time while the kids are out of school. Toys will be available for the kids to play with while the grown-ups make a great new educational toy. Only adults need to register.

Thursday

Year-Round Family Story Time-Elephants: 1 p.m. For all ages. An open invitation. This weekly story time, open to all ages, introduces stories through books, songs, and activities. Children 3 and younger must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.

Library Family Cafe-Sharing Books & Playing with Very Young Children: 6:30 p.m. For adults. Please join us for a conversation about making books fun and playing with your young children, birth through age five. We will also discuss how your library can help you and your children as well as share ideas with other parents and caregivers. The program will be in English and Spanish. Children's activities will be offered; please give the age of your child(ren) if they will be attending. A hearty snack will be served. Space is limited. Babies and Bagels: 10 a.m. For ages birth-3. Join us for breakfast. Come in for an informal playgroup for babies, toddlers, and their caregivers. Enjoy bagels, orange juice, and adult conversation while the babies play. Children 3 and younger must be accompanied by an adult caregiver. Refreshments will be served.

Saturday

Petting Zoo in the Park: 10 a.m. For all ages. Meet some furry friends in our very own Mary Lou Dewey Sculpture Park in front of the Westminster Branch Library. This event will be cancelled in the case of inclement weather. Children 3 and younger must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.

Sunday

From Seed to Plate: 2 p.m. For all ages. Register for this event today. Join our friends from Living Waters Garden Center in Westminster as we explore planning, planting, and tending to your edible family garden. Come dressed to get dirty as we will be planting seeds to take home. Children 3 and younger must be accompanied by an adult caregiver. All attendees need to register.

Inch by Inch, Row by Row, We're Gonna Make This Garden Grow: 2 p.m. For all ages. Westminster Branch Library has a garden plot in the Westminster Community Garden, located at East Middle School/Skate Park Gardens. And because hands-on gardening is the perfect way for families to get outside and get their hands dirty, among other things, we'd like you to join us in the garden. Each gardening season offers unique and engaging activities, so each week in the library garden will be different. There will be lots of garden-related activities throughout the growing season, and each week's activity will be guided by library staff. Come grow with us. Work clothes are recommended. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Please meet at East Middle School/Skate Park Gardens, weather permitting. A Celebrating America program.

Monday

On My Own-Feelings: 10:30 a.m. For ages 3-6. A theme-based story time for children who are ready for an independent, small group experience. All adult caregivers are welcome.

Only the Shadow Shows: 7:30 p.m. For ages 10-adults. Have you ever wanted to make the moon or sun disappear, if only briefly? Have you ever wondered why people thought the earth was flat even though its shadow was curved? Skip Bird, Observatory Director of the Westminster Astronomical Society and Carroll County's resident mad scientist, will talk to us about these and other ideas related to a lunar eclipse. You'll get to make your very own eclipse, while also learning why lunar eclipses don't happen more frequently. Skip will be bringing time machines, provided by the Westminster Astronomical Society, to observe the sun/stars, weather permitting.

Finksburg library branch

The Finksburg branch of the Carroll County Public Library, 2265 Old Westminster Pike, Finksburg, will offer the following programs this week. Registration is required only where noted. For more information, call 410-386-4505 or 410-386-4488.

A Virtual Tour of Civil War Monuments: 7 p.m. For ages 10-adults. Register for this event today. The monuments at Gettysburg are more than just statues and granite. Many were put up by the veterans themselves; each one is unique and has a story to tell. Join local history buff Nancy Householder to hear these stories. A Celebrating America program. All attendees need to register.

Come Learn with Me @ the Library-Rhyming: 10:30 a.m. For ages birth-5. Register for this event today. Please join us for a playgroup for children and their caretakers to learn and play together. This special program will feature a variety of play centers and will include time for reading, artwork, lots of play and plenty of surprises, all while building skill development and school readiness. Space is limited and registration is required. Please register children only, but an adult is expected to attend with the child. In partnership with the Kiwanis Club of Westminster.

Little Red Riding Hood: 11 a.m. For ages 3-10. Register for this event today. Daisy Troop 10157 will perform their twist on the classic tale Little Red Riding Hood. Join them for a fun show and refreshments. The troop will be collecting donations for the Baltimore County Humane Society. Please see the Humane Society's website - http://www.bmorehumane.org/ under Support for their Wish List. All attendees need to register. Children age 3 must be accompanied by an adult caregiver. Refreshments will be served.

PAWS to Read: 2 p.m. For ages 6-17. Register for this event today. Come to the library and read a story to a book-loving dog. Research shows that children enjoy improving their reading skills by practice reading to animals. Registration preferred but walk-ins welcome. Only kids need to register.

Monday

Alphabet Train-Letters P & Q: 11 a.m. For ages 3-6. Climb aboard each week to explore a different letter of the alphabet through books, songs, and activities. All adult caregivers are welcome.

Let's Get Buggy: 2 p.m. For ages 7-12. Register for this event today. The days are getting longer, the weather's getting warmer, and the flowers are starting to bloom. That means it's time for insects. Come learn the basics about insects and some of the roles they play in our area by becoming an insect. Participants will test their skills at being insects during a hands-on game. Only kids need to register.

Game Night at the Library: 6:30 p.m. For ages 13-adults. Playing board games live vs. online creates a fun environment where just interacting with the people you live near can significantly strengthen your community, spur organization, and build friendships. Stop by for game night at the Finksburg Branch Library.
