Here are some recent student highlights from the New Town High School music department:

Tuesday, April 10 - Jason Matthews, member of the class of 2012, was selected to perform with the All American Honor Band. He will represent the state of Maryland in this national marching band made up of students from all 50 states. Through the rigorous application and audition process, Jason was chosen as 'the best trombonist' from among hundreds of other high school musicians in the state of Maryland. From December 27, 2012 through January 3, 2013 Jason will be in Pasadena, Calif., where he will have the experience of a lifetime.

Jason will rehearse and perform with this national, cream-of-the-crop ensemble. He will also benefit from the instruction of several renowned conductors, and meet many new friends and make lasting memories that will serve to enhance his already strong musicianship. Jason is also set to spend two-fun filled days at the famed Disneyland Park. The Tournament of Roses Parade will be televised nationally on New Year's Day, January, 1 2013. Jason, you have made New Town High School so proud!

May 10, 2012 - The "Musictime Ensemble" performed magnificently at the Annual Very Special Arts Festival held at Oregon Ridge Park. As the music teacher of the CLS class (students with Autism), Yvette Harris featured the students singing, and tap dancing with exciting choreography of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video. The audience was exuberant with applause and appreciation.

Tuesday, May 15 - All the instrumental and vocal students presented their Spring Concert at New Town High School for an enthusiastic and appreciative audience. The performance featured the Symphonic Winds, the Virtuosity Jazz Band, the Concert Choir, the Men's Chorus and the Honors Chorale. Each ensemble performed with competence and fervor. It was a magnificent evening; ending with a poignant tribute to our graduating seniors.

Saturday, May 19 - Instrumental students, Jason Mathews, Michael Russell, Jassiem Brown and Camryn Beckford performed for judges at the Maryland State Solo & Ensemble Festival. Their strict practice regimen, exceptional musicianship and superb tone earned Jason, Michael and Jassiem a Superior Rating for their solo work. Likewise Jason and Camryn earned a Superior Rating for their duet selection.

Jason performed an imposing trombone solo. Michael played a virtuoso flute solo. Jassiem performed a monumental trumpet solo. Jason and Camryn played an amazing horn duet. Yvette Harris is to be commended for the many hours of private tutoring she gave toward the success of these fine music students. We are very proud of these remarkable students for their impressive accomplishments.

Sunday, May 20 - The Baltimore County Music Educators Wind Ensemble and Chorus presented a concert at New Town High School. The purpose of the concert was to raise funds for the Kids Helping Kids Project of the Johns Hopkins Children's Center. Our very own instrumental teacher, Yvette Harris performed with the band, while D'Artangan Evans and New Town High School Alumni, Briana Bates, Chaya Barrett, Amanda Harris, Darlene Harris, Troy Jones, Jonathan Logan, and Kamryn Scott performed with chorus. It was an excellent concert filled with exciting and diverse music.

All performed beautifully and for a worthy cause.
