Steven M. Smith, 56, of Westminster

Steven Montgomery Smith, 56, of Westminster, died Saturday, June 8, 2013.

Born March 19, 1957, in Laurel, he was the son of the Rev. Donald Montgomery Smith and Elizabeth Ferguson Smith.

At the time of death, he was in hospice care at Golden Living Center due to an aggressive cancer that he had battled for the last year.

He spent his youth in various regions of Maryland including Laurel, University Park, Edgewater and then Mount Airy. In Mount Airy, he worked at a dairy farm and played football and soccer at South Carroll High School. He was also involved in church and Young Life.

He worked at Carroll County General Hospital and also attended the University of Maryland for a period of time but left in order to obtain training to become a respiratory therapist in Arizona.

He enjoyed the field of medicine and on more than one occasion administered CPR to people in need. He was a licensed respiratory therapist and in his 20s, he went to Saudi Arabia to work in a hospital for 1 1/2 years. When he returned, he worked in various hospitals and eventually got married and finished his bachelor's degree at UMBC. He then completed two years of medical school at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Va. He worked as a respiratory therapist for many years in the Baltimore area.

He was actively involved in his daughters' lives. In his later life, he was a volunteer caregiver and spent time visiting with elderly shut-ins.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are daughters Madeline and Abbey Smith; former wife Dr. Kathleen York-Jordan; and siblings and spouses Stephanie Smith Price and Bill Price, Susan Smith Belt and Jay Belt, and Sherrie Smith Harrison and Rodney Harrison.

He donated his body to the Anatomy Gifts Registry to further medical research.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of memorial service, 11 a.m. Saturday, June 22, at Crosswind Church, 640 Lucabaugh Mill Road, Westminster, with the Rev. Dave Sulcer officiating.
