SPY Fest planned as fun-filled fundraiser

St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, in Upperco, invites everyone to attend SPY Fest from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. June 7 at the church.

St. Paul Youth, also known as SPY, created this fun-filled event as a way to raise funds to benefit youth programs of Lazarus Lutheran Church and Lazarus United Church of Christ in Lineboro. These congregations both worshipped at Lazarus Church, which was destroyed in a fire in December.

Along with losing their building, the congregations lost the supplies and materials they used for programming and SPY wanted to support this fellow youth program in a tangible way. "The youth group wanted to put something on to help ... It's evolved into a kind of community thing," said Carol Hilgartner, a church member.

The day will be packed with food and activities for the whole family.

The Arcadia fire company will be on hand with a fire truck and a shred truck will be coming from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. for everyone to shred their personal documents and papers at no charge, just a freewill donation.

Carnival-type games will abound and most can be played for just one ticket. The cost will be 50 cents per ticket.

Cakewalks will be held every hour, beginning at 11 a.m. Chances for the cakewalk are $1.

Bingo will be played throughout the day, with cards available for 50 cents for one or a sheet of three for $1.

Lunch and refreshments will also be available for purchase; choose from hot dogs, hamburgers, popcorn, snowballs, baked goods, chips, soda and bottled water.

The rain date for this event is June 14.

SPY Fest proceeds will be used to benefit the Lazarus and St. Paul's youth programs.

The Lazarus congregations are currently worshipping at Lineboro Fire Hall.

St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church is at 15801 Trenton Road.

Outdoor movie

The Hampstead Ravens Youth Football and Cheerleading program and the Hampstead Lions Club Baseball program are teaming up to host a free Outdoor Movie Night June 7 at the Hampstead Lions Club Park, 4135 Hillcrest Ave., Hampstead.

Bring the family to watch the hit movie "The Nut Job." Bring along blankets or chairs and enjoy a night under the stars.

Seating opens at 6:30 p.m. and the movie begins at 8 p.m.

The organizations are asking that no outside food or drink be brought in, as popcorn, candy and sodas will be sold. All money made will be used toward the purchase of new equipment for both programs.

Hymn sing

Lazarus Lutheran Church will have its 23rd Annual Hymn Sing at 7 p.m. Sunday.

"After experiencing the devastating loss of the over 160 year old building that burned in early December, Lazarus Lutheran Church would like to again reach out to the community and surrounding areas to bring you the annual hymn sing that so many enjoyed," Linda Calhoun, church member, wrote in an email.

Since Lazarus Lutheran Church has no church building, the Rev. Matt Schenning and the congregation of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Manchester have graciously offered the use of their church building for the hymn sing.

Immanuel Lutheran is at 3184 Church St., Manchester.

The prelude will begin at 6:45 p.m. and the hymn sing will start at 7 p.m. The Rev. O.F. "Bud" Kibbe will be the song leader once again, as members of many different churches will share vocal and instrumental music with the congregation.

The evening offering will go toward rebuilding Lazarus Church.

For more information, call Calhoun at 410-374-3056.
