A Taneytown woman was charged May 15 after she allegedly burglarized a home and assaulted a man.

Lauren Brooke Carty, 27, of Bison Street, was charged with first-degree burglary, theft $100 to under $1,500 and second-degree assault.

She was released on bail after her bail review hearing Wednesday, according to electronic court records.

According to the statement of charges, police believe Carty slipped into the home of an acquaintance on Carnival Drive using a credit card because there was no damage to the front door. Carty stole a Playstation 3 video game console from the home, according to the statement. Carty claimed to have left her purse at the residence and was retrieving it.

Later in the same day, police were called to Carty’s home for a report of a fight, according to the statement. A man told police that Carty had attacked him, and police noted what appeared to be recent bite marks on him, according to the statement.

Carty threw a bag of syringe needles at one officer, at which point it took multiple officers to subdue Carty while she kicked and spit at officers, according to the statement. She eventually was detained and placed in a patrol car to be taken to Carroll Hospital.

According to the statement, Carty later told the police that she was positive for hepatitis C, a liver infection that is spread through blood or body fluids. The statement did not specify whether an officer was stuck with a needle that Carty allegedly threw.

Taneytown police did not respond to a request for comment when reached by the Times on Thursday.

Carty has a preliminary hearing scheduled for June 20. No attorney was listed for Carty in online court records Thursday evening.
