Manchester's Kipke lifts McDaniel in softball tourney

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning in the Centennial Conference softball tournament's first elimination game on Saturday in Allentown, Pa., McDaniel had the winning run on second base with Manchester resident Olivia Kipe at the plate.

The freshman from Manchester Valley High School, who had three hits through her first 14 innings of tournament play, laced a line drive into left field and Megan Moore raced home, giving the Green Terror a 2-1 victory over Washington (Md.) and a spot in Sunday's action.

The day for No. 3-seeded McDaniel (26-14) started with a 5-1 loss to second-seeded Haverford, which completed day one as the lone undefeated team and earned a spot in Sunday's championship game.

The Green Terror and top-seeded Muhlenberg will square off in an elimination game to open action Sunday, with the winner advancing to face the Fords (26-9).

Four innings before Kipe became the hero of the game, Caroline Brehm of McDaniel etched her name to yet another record. The junior, who struck out 11 in the first game of the day, entered the game needing seven strikeouts to tie Lauren Davis-Macedonia's (Ursinus, 2007-10) CC record for career strikeouts.

Brehm finished the game with 12 strikeouts, giving her 23 on the day, 325 on the season and 1,047 for her career.
