Head of the Class

Vanessa Junkin, daughter of Valerie Junkin of Hampstead, and George Junkin of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., has received the Achievement Key Award at the 2011 Spring Honors Convocation at Salisbury University.

The Achievement Key award is presented by the University Honors Convocation Committee, and is based on scholarship and campus service.

Junkin is a senior majoring in communication arts. She is editor in chief of The Flyer student newspaper, and a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Lambda Eta Sigma and the Thomas E. Bellavance Honors Program.

She is a 2008 graduate of North Carroll High School in Hampstead.

Gregory George Smith of Mount Airy, a international business student at La Salle University, in Philadelphia, Pa., was recently inducted into the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society.

Diane Hicks, a resident of Finksburg, was among the class of 595 students at Nazareth College, in Rochester, N.Y., who received undergraduate degrees during the college's commencement on May 8. Hicks received a bachelor's degree in French.

Nolan Conaway, a resident of Marriottsville, graduated this month with a bachelor's degree in BA in psychology from the State University of New York at New Paltz, N.Y. Commencement ceremonies were held May 22.

Ralph Shaver of Eldersburg graduated from Creighton University, in Omaha, Neb., with a masters of business administration, during the commencement on May 14, at the Qwest Center, Omaha.

Amber Kozo, of Finksburg, earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Wilkes University at its 64th annual spring commencement on May 21 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.

Laura Ball of Eldersburg, a member of the class of 2012 at Washington and Lee University, in Lexington, Va., earned dean's list status for the recent winter term. Dean's list status represents a term grade-average of at least 3.4 on a 4.0 scale.
