Fatal crash: Teen strikes garbage truck in Westminster

A 19-year-old was killed after his 1997 Saturn collided with a garbage truck early Tuesday morning, closing a section of Maryland Route 27 in Westminster for four hours, state police said.

Nicholas Louis Vidi of the 4700 block of Woodbine Road in Sykesville was driving north on Route 27, south of Kate Wagner Road, in Carroll County when his car veered into the southbound lane, hitting the truck driven by Jeannette Zelaya of the 200 block of Hobbitts Lane in Westminster, state police said.

Two other drivers were traveling behind Vidi, including Barry Mulligan of the 100 block of High St. in Hagerstown and Lori Ann Lowe of the 300 block of Ridge Road in Westminster.

Mulligan, driving a 2000 Honda Civic, managed to avoid hitting Vidi's car, but was struck by Lowe, driving a 1993 Toyota Corolla.

Due to the severity of his injuries, Vidi was unable to be transported to Maryland Shock Trauma Center. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lowe and Zelaya were transported to Carroll Hospital Center for non-life-threatening injuries. Mulligan refused medical treatment.
