Carroll Co. man robs bank at drive-through

A Carroll County man, who attempted to rob a bank at the drive-thru window on foot, later stole a car and managed to rob a second bank at a drive thru window with the stolen car in Mt. Airy Friday morning.

State police said James L. Meadows, 30, of the 8800 block of Brown Church Road in Mt. Airy attempted to rob the New Windsor State Bank, in the 1000 block of Twin Arch Road in Mt. Airy just before 9:00 a.m., while on foot, but he received no response at the bank window.

Witnesses described a man wearing an orange mask, who had walked up to the drive-thru window and knocked on it with a hard object, later identified as a handgun. Witnesses told police that he fled the area in what was described as a tan Chevrolet Malibu.

About 15 minutes later, State Police received another report of an armed robbery at the Bank of America, in the 100 block of East Ridgeville Boulevard, where witnesses gave a similar description of a man who pulled up to the drive-thru window in a tan car with a silver handgun, demanding money. After receiving the cash, he drove off.

Shortly after, State Police received a report from a woman who said her tan Chevrolet Malibu was stolen.

After interviewing witnesses, troopers located Meadows and his girlfriend at the Motor Vehicle Administration office next to State Police's barracks in Frederick the same afternoon. Police found the two in his girlfriend's vehicle with keys to the stolen Chevrolet and several hundred dollars in cash. Neither the handgun or the stolen Chevrolet have been located.

State police said Meadows' girlfriend was not charged and is believed to have not been involved in the robberies.

Meadows remains at the Carroll County Detention Center on robbery, first- and second-degree assault and other related charges.
