Shed explosion in Westminster injures one, damages 11 homes

Authorities are investigating a shed explosion in Westminster Saturday that injured a man and damaged 11 nearby homes, officials said Sunday.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the explosion of a 12-by-18-foot shed in the 200 block of Sullivan Road. Eleven homes were damaged in the explosion, and three were declared temporarily unsafe to live in.

The cause of the explosion appears to be accidental, officials said.

The shed exploded about 5:45 a.m. as the homeowner, Bernard Toporzycki, 56, entered the building, causing him second- and third-degree burns and other injuries.

The victim was transported to the burn unit at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center for treatment. He is in critical but stable condition.

The shed was in the rear of the victim's property.

Nearly 60 firefighters responded to the emergency.
