Fallston man, homes across the region struck by lightning this week

Lightning struck a Fallston man and was blamed for several house fires as storms moved through the region this week, volunteer fire companies and fire departments said.

The man, who was not identified, was struck about 10:15 p.m. Wednesday while closing his garage door from the inside in the 3200 block of Canterbury Lane, Harford County fire officials said. He was taken to a hospital with nonfatal injuries.

In Baltimore County, a two-alarm fire spread from the roof of a three-story apartment building in the 3900 block of Noyes Circle in Randallstown, displacing several people from the Woodridge Apartments, according to a volunteer fire company. No one was reported injured.

In Abingdon, lightning sparked a fire in a house in the 2500 block of Fairway Drive, while another fire of unknown cause broke out in a townhouse in the 1400 block of Wellspring Drive in Aberdeen. No one was reported injured, and the fires were brought under control.

In Baltimore, a fire broke out in an apartment complex in the 3800 block of Oakford Ave. in the Dolfield neighborhood. Officials did not give a suspected cause and said one firefighter was treated for a minor injury. Another house fire, possibly caused by a lightning strike, was reported in Pasadena, in the 400 block of Royal Beach Road. There were no reported injuries.

The National Weather Service doesn't keep records of how many lightning strikes are reported in an area, meteorologist Kevin Witt said.

But meteorologists noticed lots of lightning along the storm line from Harford and Baltimore counties in the Interstate 95 corridor down to northern Charles County, Witt said.

While the storms themselves weren't strong enough to qualify as severe weather, he said, "once the band of showers got to 95 from the west, it intensified enough to cause a lot of lightning."

Witt said the lightning wasn't unusual for this time of year.
