Eugene "Skid" Dailey, a longtime employee of the city's Department of Transportation, died June 3 of pancreatic cancer at Gilchrist Hospice Care in Towson.

The Street resident was 60.

The son of a police officer and a nurse, Mr. Dailey was born in Baltimore and raised in the city's Penn Lucy neighborhood.

"The reason he was nicknamed 'Skid," was because when he was born he just skidded out," said his wife of 24 years, the former Michelle Joyce.

He was a 1968 graduate of Archbishop Curley High School and earned a bachelor's degree in 1973 from the University of Baltimore. He also held a master's degree in transportation that he earned from Morgan State University in 1993.

Mr. Dailey, who began working for the city's old department of Transit and Traffic, was a transportation associate in the traffic engineering division with what is now the city's Department of Transportation, at his death.

In recognition of his long service, the city renamed Bath at Calvert streets where the department has its headquarters, as "Eugene 'Skid' Dailey Way."

The former Northwood resident who moved to Street in 1997, was an avid saltwater fisherman.

He was also a member of the Corinthian Lodge of the Masons.

A celebration of his life will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Tall Cedars of Lebanon Hall, 2501 Putty Hill Road, in Towson.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Dailey is survived by a son, Hugh Thomas Dailey of Astoria, Ore.; two daughters, Noel Rose Dailey of Street and Erin Marie Smith of Mays Landing, N.J.; three sisters, Jean Dailey of Cockeysville, Mary E. Dailey of Anneslie and Roseann Feldman of York, Pa., and two grandsons.
