23-year-old killed in West Baltimore home invasion

A man died after receiving multiple gunshot wounds during a home invasion Saturday night on the 200 block of N. Hilton Street, Baltimore police said.

According to police, three armed suspects entered a home on Hilton Street shortly after 9 p.m. and took various items from people inside. Paul Simons III, 23, arrived at the home a short time later, saw the suspects and tried to escape. At least one suspect shot Simons as he fled, and he was transported to Maryland Shock Trauma, where he later died from his injuries. Detectives are still investigating the incident.

The firefighter's union released a statement Sunday morning noting that the nearest response units were closed due to the department's budget cuts.

"When this man was shot, he had to wait for engine 14 to come from 1908 Hollins St, over 1 mile farther than engine 30s (sic) station," the statement read. "Is that fair to him?"
