Firefighters battle pair of Baltimore blazes; 1 injured

Baltimore firefighters battled two fires Thursday morning, according to the firefighters' union and a department spokesman.

In the first incident, firefighters were dispatched about 3:30 a.m. to the 700 block of Winston Ave. in North Baltimore, where they found two dwellings fully engulfed in flames, said department spokesman Kevin Cartwright.

Firefighters determined that the fire had spread from a vacant dwelling to the house next door. There appeared to be no one inside the empty house, and Cartwright said the firefighters made "good progress" in bringing the fire under control.

There were no reports of injuries, and the cause of the blaze remained under investigation, he said. Both structures sustained extensive damage.

The other fire engulfed a rowhouse on the 600 block of S. Monroe St. in Southwest Baltimore. In that incident, reported at 6:30 a.m., a person was injured and taken to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, Cartwright said.

A cause for that fire was still being determined.
