Horizon Foundation president plans to retire by end of '12

Howard County's largest foundation is looking for a new leader after Horizon Foundation president and CEO Richard M. Krieg said he is planning to retire by the end of next year.

Krieg, 63, a former Peace Corps volunteer and Chicago health commissioner, took over the Columbia-based, health-oriented philanthropy when it was founded in 1998. In a statement, he said "we've provided over $35 million for grants, strategic initiatives and foundation operations," while still growing the endowment from $70 million to $80 million.

Horizon was created as a result of the merger of Johns Hopkins Medicine and Howard County General Hospital. The foundation concentrates it's giving on health improvement programs, such as the $650,000 provided to help the Healthy Howard health access program for the uninsured get started and keep going.

A nationwide search will be conducted for a new president, and Krieg said he will stay on until that person is selected, or until December 2012.
