State police identify I-70 crash victim

The 24-year-old woman killed in a crash Friday in Howard County was identified as Ashley Marie Matthews, who died at the scene of the single-vehicle accident, Maryland State Police said Sunday.

Authorities said Matthews was driving a Ford Expedition that overturned off westbound Interstate 70 near Bethany Lane in Ellicott City. A passenger in the truck told state police that the vehicle was approaching an unknown white SUV that was traveling slower than the Ford Expedition. Matthews swerved to avoid the SUV and lost control of the vehicle, authorities said.

State police believe alcohol and speed are factors in the crash.

Two male passengers were also injured. Brandon Phillip Gaskins, 27, was transported by state police Medevac to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore and was in serious condition. Trevell Leigh Brooks, 22, was taken by ambulance to Shock Trauma and suffered nonlife threatening injuries, authorities said.
