Man tried to steal donations from Hampden holiday display

A man was arrested after he attempted to steal money raised for rescued animals at a charitable bake sale held on 34th Street Wednesday, according to BARCS officials.

Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter was holding the sale in Hampden to raise money for the animal shelter when a man grabbed the donation box from the booth and ran, the nonprofit said. A staff member and two others chased after the man.

Residents and those visiting the 34th Street holiday decorations in Hampden offered to replace the stolen money.

"It was an outpouring of holiday spirit from so many people who care about BARCS and the animals," BARCS staff member Kat Knauff said in the nonprofit's news release.

Police arrested the man and the box of donations was recovered.

BARCS will continue selling baked goods on 34th Street from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. every night through December 31.
