Cardiologist Mark G. Midei will make his first public comments Thursday morning regarding allegations he performed unnecessary medical procedures at St. Joseph Medical Center, according to his attorney.
The press conference is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at the Pikesville offices of Midei's lawyer, Stephen L. Snyder.
"Until now, Dr. Mark Midei, a former cardiologist at St. Joseph Medical Center, a Catholic Health Initiative organization, has remained quiet," Snyder said in a press release. "Dr. Midei is now telling his side of the story."
The hospital removed Midei from duty last year after a patient complaint and subsequent review of Midei's medical records.
The hospital found that he "displayed a repeated pattern of placing stents in patients based on [his] overestimation of the degree of [arterial blockage]," according to the Maryland Board of Physicians, which conducted its own review and filed professional charges against Midei this summer.
Stents are tiny mesh tubes used to improve blood flow in blocked arteries. Patients who receive them face a slight risk of stroke. St. Joseph sent letters to nearly 600 of Midei's former patients warning them that their stents may not have been required based on a cursory review of their records.
"The hospital took unprecedented action in tarnishing and forever destroying Dr. Mark Midei's fine reputation," Snyder said in a statement. "His story has yet to be told."
