Baltimore school board wins national award

The Baltimore school board has been nationally recognized for excellence in urban education leadership.

The National School Board Association presented the award to the district Saturday during the annual 2010 Council of Urban Boards of Education (CUBE) conference, held at the downtown Renaissance Harborplace Hotel.

City school leaders took part in the conference, an annual gathering of educators from more than 110 urban school districts in 35 states and the Virgin Islands, to discuss challenges facing urban school districts. It's was Baltimore's ability to overcome its challenges that earned it the award, said the head of the National School Board Association.

"Many critics said the district's problems were permanent and unfixable," said Anne L. Bryant, executive director of the national organization. "But school board members and educators in Baltimore refused to accept that grim prognosis and thanks to their vision and hard work, [city schools] are now thriving."
