Jessup inmates return to facility after Friday stabbings

Several inmates have left hospitals and returned to the Brockbridge Correctional Facility in Jessup after a Friday night stabbing incident, according to state prison officials.

Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services officials reported that several inmates were stabbed during simultaneous fights at the minimum-security facility before 10 p.m. Friday.

Seven of the inmates were taken to three different hospitals, while four were treated at the prison, said Mark Vernarelli, a department spokesman. None of the inmates suffered life-threatening injuries, he said.

No correctional officers were stabbed or assaulted, Vernarelli said.

Brockbridge is locked down and visits have been canceled for the remainder of the weekend. A number of inmates have already been transferred to other facilities, he said.

The Internal Investigative Unit of the correctional services department is leading the investigation. A motive for the assaults has not been released.
