City Council committee approves three agency leaders

A city council committee approved the appointments of three new agency heads Wednesday that were triggered by the departure of the director of Public Works last month.

The three have been running their respective departments since being named by Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake last month, but must be formally approved by the council.

Alfred H. Foxx Jr., who has headed the city's Transportation Department for the past decade, now supervises the Department of Public Works.

Khalil A. Zaied is at the helm of Transportation, leaving his position as chief of the Department of General Services. That agency is now headed by Ted Atwood, the former deputy director.

David E. Scott resigned as director of Public Works last month after coming under fire for forcing the resignation of the a popular bureau chief.

The executive appointments committee approved the nominations following brief laudatory testimony from city officials. The full council will likely vote on the agency heads at its next meeting in September.
