Maryland State Police are investigating the shooting death of a 30-year old Delaware man by two Elkton police officers who responded to his 911 call just after midnight Saturday morning and found themselves facing a handgun. Police later found a suicide note in the man's home, said a spokesman.
Dwayne M. Williams of New Castle, Del. was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting. The two Elkton officers were not identified, but Elkton chief William Ryan Sr. asked Maryland State Police to handle the investigation. Neither of the officers were injured.
Police said the Cecil County 911 center got a call early Saturday from someone reporting a man with a gun in a pharmacy parking lot in the 700 block North Bridge St. in Elkton. The first officer to arrive saw a man in a pickup truck. A second officer drove up and saw the man, later identified as Williams, holding a gun as he emerged from the truck, police said. The man raised the weapon and pointed it at the police. Both officers opened fire, as did Williams, who was hit. Police found a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol by his side, and they later determined it was his cell phone, which was in the truck, that had been used for the 911 call.
Both officers, one with 11 years of service and the other with 16 years, are on routine administrative leave.
