Man found fatally shot in West Baltimore lot

A man who was shot in the chest amid waist-high grasses of a vacant lot on a busy West Baltimore street Thursday afternoon later died, police said.

He was pronounced dead at Maryland Shock Trauma Center, said Agent Donny Moses, police spokesman. He said the man's identity has not been released.

Little information was available, but police confirmed the man was shot in the 3000 block of W. North Ave., in the Coppin Heights-Rosemont community. The shooting was reported before 3 p.m.

Detectives blocked off a portion of the sidewalk as crime scene technicians walked through a matted-down path through the tall grasses.

The block appeared completely inhabited, with boarded up homes and several shuttered businesses. Garbage and white supremacist graffiti marred the two homes adjacent to the field as people waited for a bus just beyond the crime tape.
