Authorities seek suspect in disruption of bike race

Several bicyclists were injured after someone threw tacks along a Leonardtown race course Sunday, officials said.

In a press release, the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office asked for the public's help in identifying the person who disrupted Patuxent Velo Cycling Club's Leonardtown Criterium Cycling Event.

Crashes caused by the tacks left several racers injured, including at least one participant who suffered a broken bone. Cyclists commonly travel at speeds of 30 miles per hour or more in such racing events.

Anyone with information was asked to call Cpl. M. Smolarsky of the county sheriff's office at 301-475-4200, extension 1960, or Crime Solvers at 301-475-3333. Callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
