A grand jury indicted a Glen Burnie man Tuesday on charges of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder in the shootings last month of two Frostburg State University basketball players.
Fellow student Tyrone Hall, 21, is accused of killing Brandon Carroll of Waldorf and wounding Ellis Hartridge Jr. of Washington during an early-morning confrontation April 18 at Hall's off-campus house in Frostburg.
Carroll and Hartridge had gone to Hall's house about 4 a.m. to talk about an altercation earlier in the evening between Hall and Hartridge's former girlfriend, police said. Hall greeted them at the door with a 12-gauge shotgun.
Hall told police Carroll and Hartridge lunged at him, police said. Hall fired, shooting Carroll in the abdomen and Hartridge in the hip.
Carroll, 20, was taken to a hospital in Cumberland, where he died a short time later. Hartridge, 21, remained at the hospital for several days before he was released.
Hall, a former soccer star at Mount St. Joseph in Baltimore who had dreamed of a professional career in Brazil, waited at his house with friends until police arrived. He surrendered without incident. One of his friends told police that the shotgun was under Hall's bed.
An Allegany County grand jury indicted Hall on Tuesday. A preliminary hearing that had been scheduled for Tuesday in Allegany County District Court in Cumberland was canceled.
William Brennan, a Prince George's County lawyer hired by Hall's family, declined to comment on the case Monday.
"I'm not going to try this case in the press," Brennan said.
Allegany County State's Attorney Michael Twigg did not return a phone message.
