Budget cuts keep Whitehaven Ferry on winter schedule

Baltimore Sun

The Whitehaven Ferry in Maryland will keep its shorter winter hours into spring and summer because of funding cuts. The ferry links remote areas of Somerset and Wicomico counties. Normally during warm months, the free ferry runs from 6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. But because of cutbacks, the ferry will run from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wicomico County spokesman Jim Fineran says maintaining the ferry's winter hours all year saves about $20,000 in overtime and delays the need for maintenance. The Whitehaven Ferry takes an average of 50,000 cars per year.
