Officials in Prince George's County are warning residents to stay off ice-covered ponds and other bodies of water. On Saturday afternoon around 4 p.m., a 13-year-old boy and his dog fell through an ice-covered pond in Largo. Prince George's County officials say witnesses reported that the dog went out onto the pond to chase birds and that the teenager followed him. Both apparently fell through the ice but were able to get out of the water before officials arrived. The teenager was treated for hypothermia, and was transported to a hospital. Officials say the ice covering the waterways in the area is not thick enough to support a person's weight and that above-freezing temperatures in the past few days have further thawed the ice.
