Montgomery Co. considers curfew to reduce gangs, violence

The Montgomery County Council is considering a curfew for youths younger than 18 in an effort to reduce gang activity and violence among teens.

The Council on Tuesday proposed banning youths from public places after midnight on Friday and Saturday, and after 11 p.m. on other nights. They could be back out at 5 a.m. The legislation includes some exemptions, such as traveling for a job and emergencies.

Under the proposal, the youths would be taken to a police station and released to a parent or guardian. A court could also order community service for the child, and parents could be required to take parenting classes.

In Prince George's County and Washington, curfews are in place for youths younger than 17.
