Maryland wrestler charged in weekend assault, suspended indefinitely

Charges have been filed against Maryland wrestler Justin Alexander, who is accused of assaulting a woman and trying to take her from her State College, Pa., apartment building.

Alexander, 20, of Pittsburgh was arraigned before District Judge Carmine Prestia on Thursday on misdemeanor counts of unlawful restraint, making terroristic threats, false imprisonment and tampering with fire apparatus and two summary charges of harassment and criminal mischief.

He was released on $10,000 unsecured bail.

Maryland released this statement: "Justin Alexander has been suspended indefinitely for violating the student-athlete code of conduct. We take this matter very seriously and will continue to cooperate with the authorities throughout this process."

The charges stem from an incident reported to State College police over the weekend. A woman told police she was at Beaver Hill apartments when the man approached her and asked for help with something at about 1 a.m. Saturday.

She reported that he then assaulted and threatened her and tried to remove her from the building, police said. She was able to free herself when she saw some people she knew in the building, police said. She did not suffer any injuries and didn't require medical attention, according to police.

Alexander contacted police about turning himself in earlier this week, police said.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 29.
