Aberdeen woman found 11 hours after falling overboard on Sassafras River

A missing Aberdeen woman was found Monday morning, 11 hours after she fell off a boat near the mouth of the Sassafras River, authorities said.

Lauren Conner, 32, fell overboard about 8 p.m. Sunday and made it to Spesutie Island at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, where she was found about 7:15 a.m. Monday, said Natural Resources Police spokeswoman Candy Thomson. Aberdeen Proving Ground Police, State Police and the Susquehanna Hose Company from Havre de Grace assisted Natural Resources Police in the search, Thomson said.

The width of the bay from Spesutie Island to Turkey Point is more than one mile.

"Even though the water's pretty warm right now, to have somebody make it through the night is pretty remarkable," Thomson said. Conner was being medically evaluated before being released to her family.

It was one of eight boating incidents over the weekend, none of them fatal.

A jet-skier shattered his knee cap and injured his head when he was hit by a speed boat on the South River Saturday morning, Thomson said. The victim, of Falling Waters, W.V., was taken to Baltimore-Washington Medical Center following the collision at about 11:30 a.m., Thomson said. The boat operator, of Rockville, could face reckless boating charges, she said. The incident remains under investigation.

Later Saturday, about 6:40 p.m., a 62-year-old Arnold woman fractured her skull and had internal bleeding from hitting her head when the boat she was aboard pitched in the wake of another boat on the Magothy River, Thomson said. She was flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for surgery, Thomson said.

About 4:15 p.m. Sunday, a 67-year-old man went into cardiac arrest after diving from his anchored boat into 3 feet of water near Hart-Miller Island, Thomson said. Responders revived and stabilized the victim, and he was taken to a hospital.
