The president and CEO of United Way of Central Maryland is stepping down, the nonprofit group announced Friday.
After 12 years, Mark Furst will leave the position at the charity in late October, announced Jim Wheeler, chair of the United Way's board, in a statement.
Furst "has helped redefine United Way's role and value," Wheeler said in the statement. "We have moved from being primarily a conduit for philanthropic dollars into a bona fide human service organization."
"I have loved my time at United Way," Furst said. "I feel like we've helped a lot of people and really repositioned United Way for the future."
Furst will become a senior vice president of external relations at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, a Baltimore-based nonprofit that provides medical services to children.
The United Way of Central Maryland is beginning its search for Furst's replacement.
