The University of Maryland, Baltimore County's chess team placed third out of 45 teams in a major tournament over the weekend.
The team advances to the President's Cup, dubbed the "final four of college chess."
During the weekend's Pan-American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship in South Padre Island, Texas, the team from UMBC finished behind champion Webster University of Missouri and second-place University of Texas at Dallas.
The President's Cup will be held in April in New York City. UMBC finished second last year.
