A 7-year-old girl and her father have died after drowning in a backyard pool in Maryland, and a 17-year-old boy who tried to rescue the two has been critically injured, police said.
The Charles County Sheriff’s Office says the drownings occurred Saturday at a birthday party in Waldorf.
Police say the 7-year-old girl jumped into the pool but did not know how to swim. The father — Haffis Olanrewaju Agboola, 44, of Hyattsville — went in to rescue her but also could not swim.
The 17-year-old boy saw what was happening and tried to rescue both but he also took on a significant amount of water. He was flown to an area hospital in critical condition.
Firefighters who arrived at the scene found all three victims at the bottom of the pool and jumped in to rescue them. The sheriff’s office said two of the firefighters suffered minor injuries of their own and were treated and released from a hospital.
The names of the girl and the 17-year-old boy have not been released.
