Maryland State Troopers made 7,000 traffic stops during the Independence Day weekend, state police said Monday.
The statewide campaign was part of an initiative keep the roads safe throughout the summer, police said.
Troopers issued 5,100 citations, 4,100 warnings, and more than 700 defective vehicle equipment repair orders.
The state police S.P.I.D.R.E. team has made more than 1,330 arrests since 2013. This weekend, they arrested 17 drivers for driving under the influence, police said.
Traffic enforcement initiatives were conducted over the holiday including, operations Millipede, Showboat, and Bear Claw, police said.
•Operation Millipede was conducted along I-95, resulting in 536 vehicles stopped, almost 550 citations and 280 warnings issued, police said.
•Along Route 50, Operation Showboat resulted in 773 traffic stops, approximately 560 citations and 306 warnings, police said.
•Operations Bear Claw, along I-68 and I-70, resulted in 784 vehicles stopped, 454 citations and 419 warning issued, police said.
Police said in the coming months they plan to focus on impaired or distracted drivers, speeding and aggressive motorists, and people who are not using proper safety restraints.
The Maryland State Police encourages residents to call 911 when witnessing an unsafe driver.
